PRINCETOWN – Firefighters responded to a tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 88 Monday evening, New York State Police said.

No one was injured.

The incident happened on Interstate 88 eastbound in Princetown around 9:30 p.m., police said.

Troopers responded there to reports of a commercial trailer fire, police said.

The investigation revealed that a commercial vehicle with a trailer experienced mechanical problems while traveling and was towed by a heavy-duty tow truck for repairs, a state police spokesman said.

The trailer caught fire while being towed. The tow truck and utility vehicle were able to break free before the trailer was completely engulfed, police said.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated on Tuesday.

Eastbound Interstate 88 was closed at Exit 24 for about six hours for safety reasons and trailer removal, police said. It was then reopened.
