Levi Wright’s mother breaks silence after child dies in toy tractor tragedy

Levi Wright’s grieving mother says the decision to leave the toddler unattended before his tragic drowning last month “will haunt me for the rest of my life”.

“At that point he was my sole responsibility,” Kallie Wright, wife of rodeo star Spencer Wright, wrote on Facebook Thursday, breaking her silence for the first time since the couple removed the life support system from 3 year old baby during the weekend. .

In the heartbreaking message — written at 3 a.m. — Kallie Wright shared new details about the moments before little Levi drove his toy tractor into a creek behind the family’s Utah home on May 21.

The small waterway separates the Wrights’ property from Levi’s grandparents’ property, she said, adding that a concrete road crosses it and is accessible during the drier months.

Wright even shared a video of Levi, along with his sister Steeley and their father – each on horseback – crossing the shallow creek.

“That’s how we got to their house safely most of the time, because sometimes our dirt road is a Nascar race track. My kids have ridden bikes, taken toy rides, and even walked like this a million times. Water only flows for a short time during the year and can change overnight,” Wright wrote.

“Levi didn’t do anything he hadn’t done before, but this time the water was at its peak and strong enough to push his tractor off the road into the creek as he crossed.”

That fateful day, Wright admits she gave Levi permission to drive his tractor on the family’s 24-acre property, but she gave a warning to stay away from the creek.

The child’s grandmother was not home, she told the boy, and she asked him to only move around the house.

“As he left, I ran towards the house. This is a decision that will haunt me for the rest of my life,” the devastated mother wrote.

“Whether I went back to see my sleeping baby, swapped laundry, washed a bottle, or put away lunch, I honestly don’t know. Regardless, it wasn’t more important than following him that day.

“Even though I firmly believe that our stories were written long before we reached this earth and that our Lord will take us when He is ready, I will lose sleep over it for eternity. »

Little Levi disappeared beneath the fast-moving currents and was dragged about a mile down the river, although rescuers did not know how long he was submerged.

The bubbly little tot was not expected to survive, but he showed promising signs early on despite being declared brain dead – and even woke up in his hospital bed, giving hope to his family.

Several tests and MRIs, however, proved that the child’s condition was not improving, and his family made the difficult decision on Sunday to remove him from life support.

Although wracked with guilt, Kallie Wright shared her “vulnerable and difficult” story with her followers and fended off online attacks aimed at her family.

“I know three things to be true,” Wright wrote.

“1. I’m not a perfect mom but I’m a good mom. 2. My little boy loved me with everything he had. 3. Never say never because it only takes a few seconds and it can make you happen too.

“I pray that anyone who judges me or has hurtful words to say never finds themselves the victim of a nightmare like this.”

Spencer Wright, 33, was ranked 35th in the world in 2023 by ProRodeo.

He comes from a long line of famous cowboys, including his father, ProRodeo Hall of Fame member Bill Wright.
