Latest news and results as voters head to the polls to vote for Trump or Kamala Harris

North Carolina Democrat Roy Cooper predicted there would be no delay in the state’s results.

“I think we’ll get them pretty early. But the point is, this is going to be a razor-sharp race. It’s always in North Carolina,” he said on MSNBC. “Donald Trump or JD Vance have been here almost every day for the last few weeks, it seems, because they’re worried.”

Early voting returns were high, Cooper said, adding that people also showed up today.

“There’s a lot of excitement here in North Carolina because we know we can turn the tide of this race,” he said.

One thing he noticed is that among early voters, 55.5% of the electorate was female, he said.

“That’s a record,” he said. And he believes a greater number of women voted, indicating a significant increase in voting in the state’s suburbs.

He added: “We have a lot more university-educated people. Our newer, larger counties are even larger. So we’re very confident that North Carolina can hold a key here. Considering Hurricane Helene hit last month.”

Cooper also made it clear that he wanted Harris to be elected.

“I’ll tell you, I want a president who wakes up every morning and thinks about the American people, rather than a president who wakes up every morning and thinks about himself,” he said.

Cooper said North Carolina has made a lot of progress since the state was hit by Helene. The storm more than 100 people killed in North Carolina. The power was back on, schools had resumed and many roads had reopened, Cooper said. He supported a bipartisan bill he passed to give western provinces more flexibility.

“People are definitely voting early in western North Carolina,” he said. “Their turnout is high, so their voices will be heard.”

Cooper, who withdrew from Harris’ shortlist of running mates, said it would have been very difficult for him to secure a national ticket as he has focused on Helene’s recovery over the past month.
