13-year-old killed in ‘apparently accidental’ shooting reportedly by teen in Minneapolis home

A 14-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed a 13-year-old boy early Tuesday at a Minneapolis home where several other people lived, officials said.

The “apparently accidental” gunfire occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of N. 24th Avenue and Sheridan Avenue in the 2400 block of N. Ferrant Place, according to a police statement.

Officers arrived, found the 13-year-old had been shot once and provided immediate aid to the teen before he died at the scene, police said.

Police records indicate the victim is Qudir D. Blackwell.

“Preliminary information indicates that a 14-year-old boy was handling a weapon when the 13-year-old boy was shot,” the police statement continued. Police have not released the identities of the teens.

The 14-year-old remained at the scene, was arrested and booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.

Two adult women and other juveniles were in the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

“The death of a child is always incredibly disturbing and tragic,” said Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “Our investigators will work hard to answer the many questions we have. In addition to supporting the families affected by this tragedy, everyone must do everything we can to ensure that every weapon is safely stored.”
