Infrastructure upgrade works at Sealdah station completed, train services expected to normalize soon: official

Kolkata: The ongoing infrastructure upgrade work at Sealdah railway station in Kolkata has now been completed and train services are expected to return to normal soon, an official said on Sunday.

The upgrade work began on Friday morning, leading to the cancellation or removal of several commuter trains over the past three days.

“To enable the operation of 12-car EMU trains on the Sealdah main section, we have implemented several infrastructure changes including upgrading the interlocking system. Therefore, platforms 1 to 5 of Sealdah station Sealdah were closed from last Friday till 2 p.m. today as per schedule,” said Eastern Railway spokesperson Kausik Mitra.

“However, the work was completed two hours early, allowing EMU train operations to begin on all platforms 1 to 5 from midday today. Although train services have resumed, some trains may experience slight delays,” Mitra said.

Separately, several passengers complained on Sunday of difficulties for the third consecutive day, saying they lacked information on long-distance trains, which were delayed but not canceled.

Sealdah station has remained crowded since Saturday evening with passengers affected by the cancellation and short stoppage of trains.

Another official said that of the 21 platforms at Sealdah, operations in only five had been suspended for infrastructure upgrade works.
