Peoria man is charged with murder in the death of his 2-year-old stepson

PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is facing multiple charges, including murder, for the alleged abuse that killed his young stepson in Peoria last month.

Peoria police arrested 26-year-old Hein Lwin in connection with the 2-year-old boy’s death.

On Oct. 24, Peoria police were called to a welfare check near 108th and Olive Avenue after Lwin reported the toddler was choking on a cloth. Officers and Peoria Fire-Medical attempted life-saving measures before taking the child to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

According to court documents, officers saw visible ligature marks on the boy’s neck.

Lwin reportedly told police that he left his stepson asleep at 3:30 p.m. and then went to the apartment complex’s gym for 30 to 40 minutes. He said when he returned, he saw the child lying on the floor next to a belt.

He was then taken into custody and taken to a Peoria police station for an interview with detectives.

According to documents, Lwin allegedly told detectives that he was angry after a recent counseling session and that he took out his frustration and anger on the child for being “a lot.” Lynn reportedly admitted to hitting the boy on the back and side of the head with an open hand 10 to 15 times throughout the day.

Documents say he also admitted to hitting the boy during a car ride and that the child fell several times while lying on a splash pad, causing visible injuries to his head.

Once back at the apartment, Lwin said he “roughed” the boy by picking him up by the back of his shirt, swinging him in circles and throwing him onto the bed. He reportedly did this about five times until the shirt that was tight around his neck tore and the child hit his head on the headboard on three occasions.

According to documents, Lwin said he then wiped the blood from the boy’s split lip and left the room for 30-40 minutes. When he returned, he said the boy was having trouble breathing, so he called his wife and then 911.

When told the boy might not survive, Lwin reportedly told investigators, “I deserve everything that’s coming to me.” Lwin was indicted that day on multiple charges, including attempted murder, aggravated assault and child abuse.

The child was treated for serious head injuries and died three days later on October 27. Peoria police say Lwin is now charged with first-degree murder.
