Kentucky voters reject school choice ballot measure

Ky. (WSAZ) – Kentucky voters delivered their verdict on a key education issue Tuesday, deciding whether state lawmakers can allocate taxpayer money to support students attending private or charter schools.

Voters rejected Amendment Two, which would create the ability to authorize vouchers for private schools should lawmakers choose to amend the state Constitution during the 2025 legislative session.

Because the amendment failed, state lawmakers will no longer have the power to amend the state constitution and direct public funds to private schools. Under Kentucky’s Constitution, taxpayer dollars can only fund “regular schools,” also known as public schools.

Some school administrators and teachers from urban and rural districts warned that public schools would suffer if taxpayer dollars were shifted to private education.

65.1 percent voted no on amendment two, 34.9 percent voted yes, allowing public funds to go to non-public education.
