Nintendo Switch 2 news confirmed by Nintendo president and fans are excited

Nintendo has not yet officially unveiled a Switch successor not yetbut we now know our biggest piece of information yet. A statement from President Shintaro Furukawa during Nintendo’s latest policy briefing confirms that Nintendo Switch games, as well as Nintendo Switch Online, will be backwards compatible for the “Nintendo Switch 2.” However, that’s not all. The company also pulled back the curtain on further plans for their system of the future.

That of President Fuwukara reads full statement: “This is Furukawa. During today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with Switch games and all Nintendo Switch online features.

This means that there are still a number of issues that need to be addressed, but everyone who has built up a collection of them Nintendo switch games will be able to help them move forward. Additionally, some Switch games will be available for purchase directly through the new system at launch, allowing players to expand their catalog afterwards. Access to Nintendo Switch Online is completely uninterrupted.

All this is possible thanks to the implementation of Nintendo Accounts, which were only introduced in the Switch era. These accounts allow the company to assign data and purchases to specific players, creating a renewed sense of continuity rather than “disrupting the relationship between the company and fans of each generation.”

It won’t be long before we know more about the successor to the Switch. This policy briefing noted an official announcement of the next console during the current fiscal year, which began on October 1 and ends on September 30, 2025. This is no surprise, as with two new Pokémon games in the wings (Pokemon Legends: ZA and the self-titled Gen-10 releases), fans long assumed the new console was on its way. However, the tease of later compatibility information was unexpected.

There are a growing number of older Nintendo games available to play on Switch via the NSO Classic Games Library, with titles from the NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy and Gameboy Advance all being revived through the service. We don’t yet know if other consoles will be included in the next era, but it’s definitely worth thinking about before any official announcements are made.

For now it’s back to dreaming about what might be in the pipeline. The meeting also showed off tremendous growth for popular franchises in the Switch era, specifically showcasing how much growth Kirby, Pikmin, Xenoblade Chronicles and Metroid have seen since the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Metroid Prime 4 will be released in March (en Donkey Kong land returns HD scheduled for January) there certainly seems to be an emphasis on bringing back familiar faces in 2025. Perhaps that trend will only continue with the Switch 2, but only time will tell.
