New CachyOS update is ready for wearables and adds explicit sync support

New CachyOS update is ready for wearables and adds explicit sync support

CachyOS is an Arch Linux-based distribution that appeals to all types of users. Whether it’s a casual user who just wants to run a basic set of apps and tools, or professionals who like to flaunt their Arch guru status everywhere by saying “I use Arch, by the way“.

As a rolling release distribution, it is constantly undergoing changes aimed at improving the overall experience, while adding new elements along the way.

Just a few months after the March 2024 release, we now take a look at the CachyOS June 2024 release.

We start with Linux kernel 6.9.3-3-cachyos which powers everything, with Mesa 24.1.1 currently being implemented for better graphics management, XWayland 24.1 which is accompanied by many improvements, and KDE Plasma 6.0.5 as a desktop environment.

Here are some highlights of this version:

  • Storage Improvements
  • Best NVIDIA support
  • Portable Edition Enhancements

Storage Improvements

As of this version, the ISO is now equipped with a script called โ€œcachy-chrootโ€, which aims to guide users during the chroot process, while also ensuring that partitions are mounted correctly.

THE default file system is now BTRFS instead of XFS, with the option to choose other filesystems, and the script mentioned above can also detect subvolumes for BTRFS.

Additionally, the ISO will now be copied to RAM if there is enough space available, speeding up the user experience when booting into the ISO. This was made possible thanks to the implementation of mkinitcpio microcode hook and copier.

Best NVIDIA support

Equipped with the NVIDIA 555 driver, CachyOS is among the first distributions to support explicit sync, which is the answer to NVIDIA Linux’s problems. No more flickering when using NVIDIA GPUs, and the multi-monitor experience should be better too.

The developers also allowed various services to fix the graphics corruption issue when sleep was used on Wayland sessions.

Explicit sync in Wayland is the answer to NVIDIA Linux problems!

Time to say goodbye to NVIDIA Wayland issues? It looks like that!

Portable Edition Enhancements

The portable edition of CachyOS has been promoted to stable statuswith many improvements like SDDM now using Wayland, the default kernel being linux-cachyos-deckifyhardware detection, automatic configuration/installation of relevant packages based on device, and much more.

Currently only Steam Deck, Legion Go, and ROG Ally are officially supported.
