Fani Willis wins re-election against former Trump administration intern

Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis, known for her prosecution of former President Donald Trump, will seek re-election as the top prosecutor in Georgia’s most populous county, the Associated Press projects.

Willis rose to fame in 2021 when she launched an investigation into Trump and his allies for efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Her office charged Trump and 18 other defendants in 2023, ahead of a year of legal challenges to the charges over a possible conflict of interest involving Willis and accuser Nathan Wade.

Former Trump administration intern Courtney Kramer, an Atlanta-area attorney, unsuccessfully challenged Willis for her position. Kramer describes herself on her campaign website as specializing in “politics and election law,” adding that she is “an active advocate for election integrity.”

The victory for Willis follows a turbulent day for her voters. Polling places in Fulton County were targeted by bomb threats on Tuesday, forcing officials to postpone the vote. Georgian Foreign Minister BradRaffensperger said the threats originated in Russia.

“They’re up to some mischief, it seems,” Raffensperger said. “They don’t want us to have smooth, fair and accurate elections.”

Neighboring DeKalb County was the target of additional bomb threats later in the day. Five DeKalb County voting centers had to be swept by police after the threats were made.
