Man wanted for attempted assassination of police officers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a man wanted for attempted first-degree murder is now charged with assault after punching at least two police officers who tried to arrest him.

MPD said members of the Fugitive Task Force went to a home in the 2300 block of Lowell Avenue Tuesday morning to pick up Joshua Avery, 33, on an outstanding warrant when they attacked.

According to police, an officer was preparing to force open the front door when Avery came to the door. The officers said he gave loud verbal commands to Avery to come out with his hand up, and Avery opened the door and hit him twice in the head.

Another fugitive team member said he tried to detain Avery, and Avery punched him in the face. The officer said he was forced to taser Avery to take him into custody.

Avery was also wanted for domestic violence and unlawful possession of a weapon, but police have not released details of the charges. He is currently being held without bail.
