Second teen charged in connection with Rotella Park shooting | Crime and justice

A week after a boy under the age of 13 was charged with first-degree murder, a second youth was charged.

The first minor was formally charged on October 18 with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, possession of a handgun by a minor and a sentence enhancer in connection with the October 12 murder of a 15-year-old boy. Rotella Park. It is located near a community of apartment complexes in the Welby/Coronado area, just south of Thornton.

Now, due to new evidence, the original charges against the boy have been dropped, reducing his charges to just one count of possession of a weapon by a minor, according to a news release from the 17th Judicial District Office.

A second boy has now been officially charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and other charges related to the shooting.

The shooting happened around 11:30 PM on October 12, a Saturday evening.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies found two juveniles with gunshot wounds in the park. One of the young people, a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the neck, was declared deceased by emergency workers despite life-saving measures.

Investigators discovered that a group of up to seven boys were in the park before another teen pulled out a gun and shot the two victims, a sheriff’s office spokesperson told The Denver Gazette on Sunday.

The first boy was arrested on suspicion of murder on October 16, but as noted, new evidence pointed to the second suspect as the shooter.

The first boy will not be tried as an adult due to his age and charges. The Public Prosecution Service has charged the second suspect with murder in juvenile court and has not yet decided whether or not the case will be referred to adult court, a spokesperson for the public prosecutor said.
