WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Burke County Sheriff Alfonzo Williams attended Tuesday’s vote, but it’s unclear if he won re-election.

That’s because the Democrat is in a race against Republican candidate Brad Capitosti.

Counting ballots in a write-in campaign is a labor-intensive process done by hand.

Williams faced an early challenge from Lewis Blanchard, who used to work for Williams. But Blanchard eventually dropped out of the race.

The campaign followed the recent resignations of several high-profile members of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

Williams himself has been at the center of controversy for some time.

He is under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. In April, News 12 asked the GBI about the nature of its investigationand the agency responded: “The GBI is conducting criminal investigations consistent with this preliminary investigation.”

The The Georgia Bureau of Investigation also looked at training records at Waynesboro and Williams police. The GBI has turned the case over to District Attorney Jared Williams.

The News 12 I-TEAM has been investigating cases that did not follow the usual path after Williams intervened.

This includes the dismissal of a DUI charge against a county employee and a case against businessman Gary Flakes.
