Advocate for mothers and babies at home says new reparations system is unfair

An advocate for mothers and babies who are victims of foster homes says the new redress system is unfair.

Carmel Cantwell’s brother died after his birth in the Bessborough mother and baby home in the 1960s.

Mothers who have stayed in the institutions for more than one night and children who have lived in the homes for more than 6 months can now apply for this program.

Speaking to RedFM News, Carmel Cantwell said there should be no conditions for children born in mother and baby homes:

“I think it’s a really unfair system. First of all, it eliminates or excludes 24,000 adoptees who were in the home less than six months. I mean, the trauma for an infant, it doesn’t matter if you have was taken from your mother at one day or six months old. Concerning my mother, all mothers are entitled to compensation even if they spent one day there.
