NEW DELHI: Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday expressed shock over the death of more than 40 people in a fire in Kuwait City.

Condoling their deaths, EAM Jaishankar further said that the Indian ambassador had visited the camp and was awaiting further information on the Kuwait City fire.

“Deeply shocked by the news of the fire in Kuwait City. There are more than 40 dead and more than 50 people hospitalized. Our ambassador has visited the camp. We are awaiting further information,” he said. declared in a message on X.

Jaishankar further expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery.

The fire broke out on Wednesday morning in a building housing workers in the southern Kuwait town of Mangaf.

According to the Ministry of Health, the fire also injured dozens of people.

The region is heavily populated by foreign workers. After this tragic incident, Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad al-Yousuf al-Sabah visited the site and ordered the arrest of the building’s owner, according to Al Jazeera.

“Unfortunately, it is the greed of real estate owners that leads to these problems,” said Sheikh Fahad, who also heads the interior and defense ministries. Authorities said the fire was contained and crews were investigating its cause.

“The building in which the fire occurred was used to house workers, and there were a large number of workers there. Dozens of them were rescued, but unfortunately there were many deaths due to inhaling smoke from the fire,” Al Jazeera reported. citing the statement of a senior police commander.
