They said the deceased was identified as Saurabh Singh, a resident of Palam in Delhi. Police said he worked at an education company in Janakpuri. He was on his motorcycle to the civil court in Gurugram to convey some documents from a lawyer of the director of his office.

According to police, as soon as Singh crossed the MCD border toll plaza in Bajghera and climbed onto the elevated portion of the highway, a driver of a pick-up truck traveling in front of him suddenly applied the brakes around 5.30 pm on Monday.

They said Singh was unable to slow down and hit the back of the van, sustaining serious injuries even after wearing a helmet. Investigators said the driver of the van fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle. Singh suffered severe head trauma in the accident, police said.

Gurugram Police Public Relations Officer Sandeep Kumar said a crowd had gathered at the spot but no one immediately alerted the police control room.

“Meanwhile, Singh’s employer Manoj Kumar Bajpayee continuously called his phone after getting no response. Someone from the crowd later picked up the call and informed Bajpayee about the accident after which he rushed to the spot,” he said.

Kumar said Singh was later taken to the civil hospital in Sector 10A along with Bajpayee, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

“We are trying to trace the owner to reach the driver and arrest him. The van was seized on the spot and the body was handed over to family members after an autopsy on Tuesday,” he added.

On Bajpayee’s complaint, an FIR was registered at Bajghera police station on Monday evening against the unidentified driver of the van under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving or driving on public road) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
