Paneque de Demarest breaks competition record in long jump

Demarest junior Liam Paneque feared he would plateau last season.

Even though he was coming off numerous championships in his sophomore year, Paneque failed to achieve a PR in the long jump last season, which he called a “disappointment” after an outstanding freshman year .

But with a new perspective and some adjustments to his technique, Paneque had one of the greatest show jumping seasons of any athlete in Bergen County history. Paneque finished her historic junior season by breaking the meet record in the long jump, leaping 25-2 on her second attempt to win her first outdoor Meet of Champions title. Paneque also won the long jump at the Indoor M of Cs.

“I was hoping to get to 24 feet today, so it was a shock for me,” Paneque said of his 25-foot jump. “I knew the new form would help me to some extent, but I never thought it would add more than a foot to my initial PR. It made me feel good to see that and also the fact that I didn’t peak early and hadn’t plateaued, so it’s nice to know that I still have a long way to go. TO DO.
