Slidell police say a female SUV driver became distracted by what was happening in the back of her car and crashed into another motorist.

SLIDELL, La. — Slidell police say a motorcyclist is alive after being hit by an SUV. Police say the driver of the SUV was distracted by what was happening in the back of her car, and it was all caught on camera.

Daniel Seuzeneau of the Slidell Police Department said, “Monday afternoon at Gause and I-10, a motorcyclist stopped at a red light.”

If you watch the video closely, you can see that the driver behind is not slowing down. Seuzeneau said: “The lady behind him was distracted…and just wheeled her bike straight.”

Seuzeneau says that miraculously, the man survived with minor injuries, saying, “If you watch the video closely, you see when the vehicle hits the back of the motorcycle, it approaches and goes to the right, and she keeps going and really runs.” the bike is finished.”

He says the driver’s pets distracted her: “She said one of her dogs came from the back seat to the front, so she turned around to chase the dog… During In those brief two or three seconds, the light turned yellow, the guy braked suddenly, causing her to crash into him.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission, in Louisiana, 678 people were killed in 2021 because of a distraction inside or outside the car. More than 23,000 people were seriously injured. Seuzeneau says there are a lot of distracted driving in Slidell.

“For Slidell, being as small as we are, with 29,000 residents, we probably face 20 to 25 accidents a day,” Seuzeneau said.

Distracted driving isn’t just about texting and making calls. Distractions in the car can include your pets, your children, putting on makeup, changing the radio station, or even eating your lunch.

Monday’s incident remains under investigation.
