CALUMET TOWNSHIP — The Friends of the Calumet Public Library (FOL) have announced their used book sale for Saturday, November 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the library common room.

The book sale is a fundraiser to support the library’s programs and services. Like last year’s November Sale, this event will take place at the same time as the Old Fashioned Christmas Bazaar, held across the hall from the CLK Gym. The sale of used books is public.

Proceeds from the FOL fundraiser go toward sponsoring library services and programs not provided for by the general library budget. In recent years, funds have been used to purchase Mango Languages (a world language education program available to all library patrons), large print books, multiple titles for our Red Jacket Readers book club, and many new books, including additions to the children’s , YA Book Club. and collections for adults. The funding will also support evening programs at the library throughout the year.

The public was also invited to attend the monthly FOL meetings, which take place on the second Tuesday of the month at 5.30pm in the Community Room. Volunteers are always welcome in the library and we can help you with options.

The Calumet Public Library is located at 57070 Mine Street, in Calumet Township, in the rear of the CLK Schools. The CLK Schools library website states that the facility is a combined library that serves as both a school library and a public library. The mission of the Calumet Public-School Library is to make educational, informational and recreational materials accessible to the residents of the public library area and the students of the Calumet, Laurium and Keweenaw public schools.

The library’s inception dates back to the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company in 1898, when the company opened the original library in 1898. At that time, the company’s Summary of Operations for that year stated:

“The library will be placed under the control of the Calumet Township School Board Library Board.”

The C&H Library, like so many other community services, was first offered by the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company in 1898. When the mining industry declined dramatically in the mid-20th century, C&H closed the library in 1944 and combined it with the school library to create the Calumet Public-School Library.

The library has kept pace with technology and features an online card catalog, a virtual reference library, the Great Lakes Digital Library and many other tools, services and programs.

In 1997, the new Calumet Public-School Library was designed and incorporated into the school’s expansion, combining new oak furnishings with finished antiques from the old library to capture the essence of the turn of the century when the original library was open.
