Darien Selectmen will consider increasing commercial carrier tipping fees

DARIEN, CT — The Darien Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. June 17 to gather public comment on increasing tipping fees for commercial haulers for single-stream recycling.

The hearing will be part of the regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen.

According to a city press release, beginning July 1, 2024, Win Waste – formerly known as City Carting – will charge Darien $75 per ton to transport recycling from the city’s transfer station.

Darien currently does not charge commercial haulers for dumping single-stream recycling at the transfer station.

The Darien Department of Public Works has proposed a $75 per ton tipping fee for commercial haulers to dispose of waste from the transfer station.

If elected officials approve the increase, DPW will implement the transportation fee change beginning July 1, 2024, the city said.

Any approved fee increases will be posted on social media and at the Transfer Station Scale House, and notification will be sent to a current list of registered carriers, the city said.

All current tipping fees and residential discharge permit rates were last reviewed with some revisions in September 2022, according to the city.
