SCOTLAND don’t win against Germany very often.

And winning against Germany IN Germany, well, that’s a serious collector’s item.

But a quarter of a century ago – on April 28, 1999 – a group of sturdy Scottish players, clad in a strange salmon-colored strip, managed to achieve something that most observers thought improbable, if not downright impossible.

It was a simple friendly match between a Scottish team managed by Craig Brown, and the venue was the Weserstadion in Bremen.

And the late Tartan Army the legend would be proud of the fact that no less than SIX of his starters that night have more than decent managerial careers to look back on.

This German team had no mugs – full of famous names.

Erich Ribbeck had succeeded a certain Berti Vogts after the future Scotland the boss took them away euro 96 glory in England.

Inseparable from the late Walter Smith, for whom he played in UEFA Cup final in Manchester in 2008 and at Everton – where he spent eight years.

Today technical director at Brighton and Hove Albion, Weir died advice to aspiring professionals footballers in his family Lucas, Jenson and Kenzie.

Jensen, currently at Brighton, has represented Scotland and England at youth level while Kenzie plays for Everton.

Tom Boyd

Winning three more caps (72) against Weir (69), Boyd won the Scottish Cup with Motherwell before writing his name into Celtic folklore.

Has already had nine big clubs as a coach under his belt – including at the top flight with Norwich and Aston Villa.

Colin Hendry

Those famous “Braveheart” highlights are gone, but this product of Keith in the Highlands was another member of an extremely experienced backline.

Scottish gem mill

Son of Scottish hero Archie, Gemmill has been in charge of Scotland’s Under-21s for EIGHT years now.

He was part of the national team for Euro 1996 and the 1998 World Cup, although without making a single appearance.

Spent the best years of his career at Nottingham Forest and Everton.

Ian Durant

Part of Rangers royalty – who won 13 senior honors as a player – the talented local midfielder won 20 caps for his country in all.

It was during his Indian stay summer as he rebuilds his career after a serious knee injury injury supported in a horror tackle by Aberdeen’s Neil Simpson.

Don Hutchison

Recruited by Kenny Dalglish for Liverpool, he became more famous as a player at their rivals Everton, where he worked under Walter Smith.

Scored his goal here with a precise finish under Jens Lehmann after Lambert released Davidson and found him in space at the end of the box with a nice dismissal.

Also had two spells at West Ham and is now a pundit for TalkSPORT and ESPN FC. His Max plays for Finnish harps outside in Ireland.

Allan Johnston

Mean winger with a wiry frame that earned him the nickname “Tacky.”

Unplayable in his day – like the time he scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 earn for Hearts at Ibrox – Johnston was a Sunderland player at this stage, en route to winning the title Soccer League Premier Division crown.

He was loaned to Bolton before joining Rangers and then Kilmarnock and also enjoyed success as a manager, winning league titles with Queen of the South and Dunfermline.

Out of work Since the end of his second stay in Dumfries, his son Max is currently playing at Sturm Graz and has an outside chance of going to Germany this summer.
