EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – The metallic blues, greens and yellows of unique beetle species were on full display during a recent STEM student event with the Eglin Nature-Inspired Research Center June 14.

Laura Bagge, Air Force Research Laboratory NIRF senior biologist, engaged STEM students from the Air Force Leadership Experience Growing Apprenticeships Comended to Youth program in a discussion about polarization measurements in beetles, with the goal of sparking their interest in science.

Bagge explained how various species of beetles possess polarization signatures, a rare and unique optical property. She described how these polarization signatures are generated and used to develop advanced sensor designs in weapon systems.

The Air Force LEGACY program aims to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
