After last year’s 9-2 season that ended with a win in the Grizzly Bowl, the College of the Redwoods football team is less than three months away from its Sept. 7 season opener on the road against Merced College.

Before that, the team will travel to Ashland, Oregon, for a scrimmage against Southern Oregon University, an NAIA school, two weeks before the regular season kicks off for the Corsairs.

While construction on the Corsairs’ new football/soccer/track and field stadium is still underway, the College of the Redwoods plans to host its home games at the Redwood Bowl at Cal Poly Humboldt. The Corsairs’ first home game will be in Week 2, when Hartnell College returns to the North Shore. Hartnell College is who the Redwoods beat in last year’s Grizzly Bowl 63-0, with this Week 2 game likely to be a spirited contest, much like last year’s Bowl Game, even with a unbalanced score.

In Week 3, CR will face another American team from the Golden Coast Conference, the Monterey Peninsula Lobos. The Corsairs and Lobos also faced off last season, with CR earning a 24-10 road victory after trailing 10-3 at halftime. CR then hosts back-to-back games against San Jose City College and Chabot College in Weeks 4 and 5. A year ago, the Corsairs took on San Jose 40-20 in San Jose while CR did not face Chabot , who finished the year winless at 0-10.

After the game against Chabot, the Corsairs will head into American-Pacific 7 Conference play, heading to Pittsburg, Calif., to take on Los Medanos. Last year’s 42-7 win over Los Medanos for CR ended up being what separated the two schools in the American-Pacific 7 Conference standings, as the Corsairs finished second at 4-1 while Los Medanos finished third at 4-3.

After a week off, the Corsairs hit the road again for another conference game against Yuba College. In 2023, the Redwoods defeated Yuba 50-7 in a comfortable home win and they will look for the same result in Marysville this season.

The Corsairs then get their second bye week in three weeks before facing conference opponent De Anza College at home, CR took care of business last year against the Mountain Lions 32-6. Next week will be the Corsairs’ final home game of the regular season, taking on Cabrillo College in mid-November. CR has not faced the 6-4 Cabrillo team in 2023.

The final game of the regular season will be a conference matchup against College of the Siskiyous, a team the Corsairs beat last year with a 42-0 home victory where Siskiyous finished the game with 37 total yards of offense .

College of the Redwoods will enter the season of six straight winners, with the Corsairs and head coach Jason White hoping to build on their success from last season, as the school now enters year three following the brief absence of the team from 2020 to 2022.

College of the Redwoods Dinner and Auction

CR will host its annual dinner and auction on August 15. The college is currently looking for items to auction, with donors able to donate items for a specific program or team. The auction will take place at the CR gymnasium with the festivities starting at 5:00 p.m.

This year’s auction is sponsored by Blue Lake Casino and will honor the college’s early wrestling era, from 1967 to 1982. The Corsairs wrestling program returned last year with a men’s and women’s team.

“Our athletic department is excited to recognize the return of men’s wrestling and the addition of the women’s program, and to reconnect with the outstanding legacy of our wrestling program that operated from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s.” , said Corsairs athletic director Bob Brown. said. “Many members of these former teams were instrumental in supporting these programs’ re-entry into intercollegiate competition last season. The goal is to create a similar level of legacy of success over time with Coach Brandon Benvenuti and his staff, mirroring the excellent wrestling that took place at CR under the tutelage of Head Coach Jim Sylvia.

If you would like to donate items for the auction, contact CR Executive Director, College Advancement & the CR Foundation Marty Coehlo at 707-476-4325 or by email at [email protected]. Tickets for the auction are available online at https://app.donorview.com/lekpY.
