Family shocked after prison staff put body back on wheelchair

Dibrugarh: Tension prevailed outside the Dibrugarh Central Jail on Thursday evening after a family alleged that the jail authorities handed over the bodies of their relatives, who were released on bail earlier in the day, to them on a wheelchair. The deceased, Shailja Borgohain (30), was arrested. on June 10 and was sent to Dibrugarh jail. He resided at Gondhia Puroni Gaon in Tingkhong area of ​​Dibrugarh. On Thursday, Borgohain was released on bail by the court. His family members went to the prison to take him home around 5 p.m. However, they claimed Borgohain’s body was handed to them by two prison staff in wheelchairs. According to the family, Borgohain was already dead when they received his body. When the family refused to accept the body, senior police officials rushed to the jail to pacify the agitated people. A police team led by the officer-in-charge of Dibrugarh Raju Chetri police station took the body to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for post-mortem. The autopsy report is still awaited. Dibrugarh jail authorities are yet to issue a statement on the incident. Borgohain’s family filed a complaint with the Dibrugarh police station, alleging serious human rights violations. They say Borgohain, a father of two, was in good health at the time of his arrest and demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death. Dibrugarh SP Rakesh Reddy on Friday said an investigation has been ordered to ascertain the circumstances. leading to the death of the inmate. “We are waiting for the autopsy report to determine the cause of death,” he added.
