Kirtland police announce new rules for Kiwanis Strawberry Festival

Recent problems at summer festivals are prompting communities to institute new rules to try to prevent problems at their festivals.

One of the festivals taking part is the Kirtland Kiwanis Strawberry Festival, which takes place next weekend.

“Times have changed a little bit; as a result, we’ve had to change and take a proactive approach to making this the safest environment for everyone,” said Jamey Fisher with Kirtland Police.

Before entering the festival, everyone and their bags will be searched.

Additionally, no child who lives outside of the Kirtland School District or who does not belong to a faith-based organization in Kirtland will be permitted entry without a parent or legal guardian.

No hoods or face masks not intended for medical reasons will also be permitted.

“We just want people to come here with the right intentions and that’s to have a good time,” Fisher said.
