Milwaukee traffic circle goes viral for reckless driving crashes caught on camera

A Milwaukee roundabout is gaining internet popularity thanks to TikTok for reckless drivers causing accidents. The roundabout is near 6th and Virginia streets in Walker’s Point. The man behind the account, @mke.roundabout, does not want to be identified and agreed to be interviewed by WISN 12 News on Friday. He said he bought a surveillance camera and began collecting accident videos after a reckless driver crashed into a nearby wine store in October. “It was really just to raise awareness about the reckless driving problem that’s happening in Milwaukee,” the TikToker said. Since creating the account a week ago, @mke.roundabout has 11,000 followers and hundreds of thousands of views. A TikTok shows a police chase that ended in a crash at the roundabout in December. “The bad ones, the bad ones, are just a complete disregard for the speed limit,” the TikToker said. People living nearby told WISN 12 News the city added concrete barriers along 6th Street to prevent cars from driving on the sidewalk. Community map data from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation shows 16 crashes at or near the roundabout since October 2023. “I would say it’s probably people texting the most,” said Henry Schwartz, owner of Mobcraft Beer at 5th and Virginia.WISN 12 News asked the Milwaukee Department of Public Works if the roundabout needed any modifications. A spokesperson cited DOT data that shows roundabouts reduce total crashes by about 35 percent. In March, the city received $36 million from the federal government to redo 6th Street from National Avenue to North Avenue. This roundabout is included in this 2.6-mile stretch, but plans for the grant have not yet been announced.
