Survival horror Silver Pines feels like a 2D Silent Hill – GameSpew

Survival horror Silver pines has released its first trailer, and while this Steam game is still in its early stages, we’re seriously digging its Silent Hill vibe.

Described by developer Wych Elm as a secondary Metroidvania, Silver Pines has your FBI agent waking up in the titular town, with no memory of how they got there. As they travel through the city, they, or rather you, encounter disturbing monsters, bizarre NPCs, a strange red light and much more.

The Silver Pines developer cites The X-Files and Twin Peaks as inspirations, but its trailer just screams Silent Hill. From the dark color palette to its otherworldly enemies to the familiar way it highlights locations on its map, we wonder why Konami never made its own 2D Silent Hill.

The protagonist of Silver Pines appears to be slightly better armed than Silent Hill 2’s James Sunderland, wielding an assault rifle against the otherworldly terrors of the town. We particularly like how each blood splatter stands out against its more subdued tones, and the muzzle flashes briefly illuminate the game’s moody locations.

The trailer hints at the mystery that will drive the game, with its protagonist finding a Polaroid and the words “find her” on a mirror. We’re already trying to figure out what the plot twist will be. Was the FBI protagonist from Silver Pines dead the whole time? Could they be a secret serial killer? We’ll have to wait to find out.

Unfortunately, we might have to wait a bit as Silver Pines currently doesn’t have a release date. But if you’re as intrigued as we are, you can add Silver Pines to Steam now and follow its progress on Twitter/X.
