Paris 2024: Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid ready to represent Team USA at Olympics after fitness issues

Joel Embiid has revealed he is “doing great” as he attempts to recover from injury in time to represent Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Philadelphia 76ers center’s fitness was in doubt after missing the majority of the regular season, and he then limped into the playoffs with a knee issue.

“I’m doing it well. I’m just preparing for the Olympics,” Embiid said. “It’s going to be big for me because I’ve been dreaming about it since I was a kid.”

Team USA’s roster also includes two other centers, Bam Adebayo of Miami and Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Embiid was eligible to represent his home country as well as France which granted him citizenship in July 2022.

He was even selected to play for Cameroon at the 2017 FIBA AfroBasket, which he later missed.

But the 30-year-old joined the American team in October.

“Over the past few years, every decision I have made has been based solely on family,” Embiid announced at the time.

“My family, my son, and having the chance to represent a country like the United States, since my son was born here.

“I love my home country, but I really wanted to compete in the Olympics.”

The timely return to fitness of the six-time All-Star and three-time All-Defensive team selection will be good news for head coach Steve Kerr.

Potential Team USA selections Tyrese Haliburton of Indiana and Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers both suffered hamstring and knee injuries, respectively, during the NBA playoffs.

Four sets of basketball medals are at stake at the Olympics, with the 5-on-5 event taking place from July 27 at the Pierre Mauroy stadium in Lille before heading to the Accor Arena in Paris for the final phase .

A simultaneous 3×3 event will take place on Place de la Concorde from July 30 to August 5.
