Juneteenth celebrations in Hampton Roads take center stage

NORFOLK, Va. — Juneteenth celebrations began this weekend in communities across Hampton Roads. In Norfolk, the message was unity.

The Juneteenth holiday is Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

On Saturday morning, the “Stop the Violence Team” joined people in a Juneteenth parade. This was the second annual celebration held in the Diggs Town community.

Bilal Muhammad, of the Stop the Violence team, said the aim was to bring people together.

“We try to set an example, to be a model for all the different neighborhoods,” Muhammad said. “Let them know that by opposing crime, by opposing violence, by opposing the gun violence and the homicides that took place in this celebration today, we are going to have greater impact,” he added.
