New Delhi (India), November 5 (ANI): Appreciating a petition seeking to make mandatory the use of A4 size sheets of paper instead of legal size ones, and double-sided printing, before the Delhi High Court (HC) and its headquarters. subordinate courts for all purposes, a Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan on Thursday said the suggestion would be taken up by the HC’s rule-making committee.

The Delhi High Court had earlier directed its registry to treat the representation of law students as a petition, in a bid to protect the right to equality, as well as the environment.

Chief Justice Patel and Justice Jalan, after considering the petition, said that an administrative decision would be taken on the suggestion, before disposing of it.

The petitioners, a group of law students, said that due to uniformity in terms of paper usage and environmental protection, the Supreme Court of India has already implemented the Use A4 size paper and double-sided printing for all purposes. .

For ease of access to justice, it becomes necessary for the court to mandate the use of A4 size paper equally in the Delhi High Court and all its subordinate courts, the plea said.

He added that the practice of using legal size paper/hard copy paper is a British colonial practice and has made justice costly and inaccessible. This is an arbitrary exercise and in violation of Article 14 (provides for equality generally) and Article 21 (guarantees right to life and liberty) of the Constitution of India, the statement said. advocacy.

“A4 size paper is easily available and is used by all government departments and the corporate sector which are the main litigants. It is only in the courts that legal size paper is used exclusively without any logic or reason” , says the plea. .

He added that it is an undeniable fact that courts are for the people and people are not for the courts. Therefore, the procedure and practice in courts should be user friendly for easy access to justice, the plea said.

The plea also mentions that the use of single-sided printing of legal size paper compared to double-sided printing of A4 paper is detrimental to the health of our environment as there would be more felling of trees, more waste of paper. and environmental degradation.

According to the petition, the High Courts of Kerala, Tripura and Calcutta have also implemented the use of A4 size paper and double-sided printing for all purposes.
