Texas police are now allowed to have ‘well-groomed beards’

Plano police officers are now allowed to have “well-groomed beards,” police department officials announced Tuesday.

“This decision reflects our commitment to evolving with the needs and preferences of our workforce while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and public safety,” a statement from the Plano Police Department said.

The officers with facial hair will maintain a professional appearance, which will remain a priority, according to the statement posted on social media. The policy will be in effect for a year and reassessed at the end of 2025, the department said.

“We understand that change can be difficult, but we believe it is important to embrace new traditions that promote camaraderie and individuality within our department,” the statement said. These traditions symbolize our commitment to adapt and evolve as a department.”

The policy change mirrors a move by the Dallas Police Department, where city officials announced in June that officers would be added allowed to show tattoos and beards.

The changes were intended to boost morale and align the agencies with others across the country, according to a news release from the city of Dallas.
