North Country Hospital completes emergency room expansion project

NEWPORT –– North Country Hospital has completed a major expansion of its emergency department, adding four private rooms and improving patient privacy and security. The project, which began in October, was unveiled today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by hospital CEO Thomas Frank.

The new space includes four private rooms, each equipped with windows for natural light and negative pressure isolation capability for patients with respiratory or airborne illnesses. The multipurpose rooms also have cardiac monitors and can be easily converted into safe spaces for patients experiencing mental health crises by simply closing a door.

The expansion includes a spacious decontamination shower with a separate emergency medical services (EMS) entrance, allowing staff to treat patients before they enter the main ward. The addition also houses a patient toilet, a separate shower, storage space and two offices for the care manager and clinical manager.

The need for an expansion became apparent when the hospital’s former emergency department, opened in 2006 with five beds, quickly became overcrowded. Lack of space sometimes led to patients being treated in corridors, compromising their privacy and comfort.

Planning for the expansion began years ago, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project required a certificate of need, which the hospital administration at the state level advocated.

The project was made possible through the support of generous community donors, the hospital foundation and the board of directors. CEO Thomas Frank played a crucial role in gaining state approval. The design was created by Lavallee Brensinger Architects and delivered by HP Cummings Construction Management Services.

The emergency department team was recognized for their resilience and adaptability throughout the construction process, which included reduced capacity and various distractions. The completion of this expansion marks a significant milestone in North Country Hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care to the community it serves.
