Update on the shooting incident in Rumford Tuesday evening

RUMFORD, Maine (WABI) – An update has been provided on the shooting incident that prompted an hours-long shelter in Rumford.

The Rumford Police Chief says they were called to an active shooter on State Route 232 in Rumford Corner Village on Tuesday evening around 8 p.m.

Officers determined that a man in the area had fired several shots, then crashed his vehicle into a home at 61 State Route 232, set the home on fire and fired several more shots into the home before running away .

Police issued a shelter-in-place order as they searched the area, along with assistance from the Maine State Police.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, police found the man with a life-threatening injury after they say he shot himself. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment.

No one else was injured in the incident and investigators were still on scene into the early hours of Wednesday.
