7.6-pound summer flounder, the latest great local catch

The weather is superb, as are the variety of fish that inhabit our waters as summer approaches.

Reports describe summer flounder, striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, black drum, as well as kingfish and spot.

Black sea bass are on the wrecks and reefs, but we only have a few days left before the end of the current season.

Many weighings are reported and accompanied by photos of smiling fishermen with quality fish.

Andy Grossman At Riptide Bait & Tackle in Brigantine, we weighed what might be the biggest bluefish so far this season when local angler Dan Massimino transported in a 12-pound slammer Monday morning.

This takes the top spot in the Riptide rankings.

Andy said the striped bass and black drum just don’t want to leave the waters around Brigantine.

Christmas Felicianofor another example, said he recorded four summer flounder Monday morning – two each from two anglers.

A named premises AC Fritz runs the Just Go Fluking competition. Feliciano is out of One-Stop Bait & Tackle in Atlantic City. This angler added two more 2.3-pound flounder to his total.

Anthony Morreroof Galloway Township, also entered two on the leaderboard Monday with entries of 3.1 and 2.7 pounds.

Noel also reported some big weak fish and alligator blue fish, along with a few kingfish and spots.

Dave Showell said he encountered small blue fish breaking the water in the back bays of Brigantine and in the Absecon Creek area. Dave runs fishing trips from his sports center in Absecon Bay.

He said he saw the bird action, stopped to investigate and got a little blue. He said if you see birds diving, “don’t ignore it!” » He also said the water temperature in our back bays has warmed up to 68 degrees.

Tournament Discussion

It’s a busy tournament weekend here in South Jersey, and most of the local coastline is covered in contests this weekend.

The 18th annual Grassy Sound Marina Summer Flounder Tournament will take place Saturday. This is a back bay event for boat crews and kayakers. The boundaries are from Corsons Inlet to Cold Spring Inlet.

The registration deadline is Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the North Wildwood Marina, followed by a captains meeting. The boat registration fee is $275.

First, second and third place prizes for the heaviest combined weight of the two heaviest flounder are awarded in the boat division. Additionally, they welcome women and youth ages 15 and under, as well as a Daisy Mae Award. Optional calcuttas are available.

The classic Brutus of winter flounder, striped bass and white perch is also on Saturday. The captains’ meeting for this popular contest will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at the Egg Harbor Elks Lodge 2563 located at 1815 Somers Point-Mays Landing Rd. in Egg Harbor Township.

This is where the weigh-ins will take place, from noon to 3 p.m., followed by an awards banquet. The tournament director is Walter Gregory.

As for the Brigantine area, this is the Brigantine VFW Fish Around the Clock Flounder fiasco. This begins Friday morning and ends Sunday afternoon.

This is the heaviest size of three summer flounder with cash prizes. The registration deadline is Thursday. Grossman is one of the committee members and Riptide is the recording station and weighing station.

Boundaries run from Great Egg Harbor Inlet to Barnegat Inlet, but competitors must start from Absecon Inlet or Brigantine Inlet. Proceeds will benefit the VFW National Home for Children in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
