Liverpool should keep a close eye on Jurgen Klopp sending a new message to the former club’s new head coach.

After Jurgen Klopp praised new Borussia Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin, calling him a “super” coach in the making, Liverpool should be watching closely. The former Reds man and Dortmund stalwart with two spells at the Bundesliga club, has now become their new head coach following the departure of Edin Terzic.

Former Dortmund coach Klopp is nothing short of optimistic about Sahin’s future as a manager, having expressed his enthusiasm over the 35-year-old’s ability to develop into a top-class manager. “At 35, Nuri is a very young coach, but so am I,” Klopp remarked while speaking to Bild. “I am convinced that after his outstanding playing career he will also become a great manager. Of course, I wish him the greatest success at BVB.”

Taking the position previously held by Terzic, Sahin takes charge after Dortmund secured a fifth-place finish and an appearance in the Champions League final, where they were pipped to by Real Madrid. And while Klopp’s belief in Sahin’s abilities is undoubtedly influenced by the memorable partnership they shared during their successful spell at Dortmund, they are not misplaced.

While Sahin totaled 274 appearances for Dortmund, he joined them as an assistant in January. Previously, he had flourished as a player under Klopp, winning both the Bundesliga title and the Player of the Season award during the 2010/2011 campaign, although his time at Anfield was not as successful as he struggled to make an impact.

After Borussia Dortmund, Sahin made the jump to Real Madrid, with Klopp’s blessing and the promise of a lifelong friendship. When his Spanish chapter failed, Sahin found solace in a return to Dortmund, thanks to Klopp’s unwavering support. Although he didn’t really get the chance to show it at Anfield, Sahin was an intelligent and astute midfielder – the exact type of footballer you would expect to be able to become a manager of high level.

In an interview with Goal in May 2021, Sahin sang Klopp’s praises, particularly for the Liverpool manager’s comforting blend of human touch and tactical acumen, and it has since become clear that his principles were influenced by the ‘German. “There is no doubt about his coaching, he is very good,” said Sahin, adding: “But what I like most about him is that he is human. He touches you on the level human… That’s what I liked about him and what I learned about him.”

After hanging up his boots, Sahin quickly took charge of Antalyaspor in 2021, impressively avoiding relegation to lead them to a respectable seventh place. His exploits as a manager earned him a place at Dortmund as an assistant and, following Terzic’s departure, Sahin has now taken the helm as head coach.
