Pakistan’s painful journey in the 2024 T20 World Cup ended on a positive note as the Babar Azam-led side finished with a three-wicket win over Ireland on Sunday. The 2009 champions had a dismal showing in the showpiece event, getting eliminated in the group stage. For the very first time in the history of the T20 World Cup, Pakistan bowed out of the tournament in the first round. The entire team, especially skipper Babar Azam, received harsh criticism from across the world for their poor performances.

After Pakistan’s humiliating exit, one question that is on everyone’s mind is the future of Babar Azam as skipper. Earlier in 2023, Babar had resigned as captain after Pakistan were eliminated in the championship stage of the ODI World Cup.

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board showed its faith in him and he was reappointed. When asked about his future, Babar said he would happily accept whatever decision PCB takes.

“When I gave up the captaincy (in 2023), I thought I shouldn’t do it now, that’s why I left it and announced it myself. Then when they returned it to me, it was the PCB’s decision. When I go back, we will discuss everything that happened here,” Babar said in the post-match press conference.

“And if I have to leave the post of captain, I will announce it openly. I will not hide anything behind it. Whatever happens, it will happen in the open. But for the moment, I haven’t thought about it. It’s ultimately the PCB’s decision.” he added.

The star batter further said that poor performance of the entire team was behind Pakistan’s debacle in the World Cup and individuals cannot be blamed.

“I told you we didn’t lose this because of any one person. We win and lose as a team. You point out that (I’m) the captain, but I can’t play for everyone player. There are 11 players, and each of them has a role. That’s why they came to play the World Cup. I think we didn’t manage to play well as a team. calm down and accept that we didn’t play well as a team,” Babar said.
