WASHINGTON (Gray DC) — President Joe Biden signed an executive order Tuesday that would protect about 500,000 undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation. The move would make it easier for some undocumented immigrants to obtain a green card and access U.S. citizenship. She is also expected to face legal challenges almost immediately.

At a White House ceremony marking the 12th anniversary of the DACA program, one of the programs benefiting so-called Dreamers, President Biden signed an executive order that would protect about half a million undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation.

“For wives or husbands and their children who have lived in America for a decade or more but are undocumented. This action will allow them to file paperwork to obtain legal status in the United States, allowing them to work while they remain with their families in the United States.

This executive action will give these individuals – who have lived in the country for at least 10 years – a path to citizenship and the ability to legally work in the United States. President Biden emphasized that his actions were simply to keep families together.

“The action I am announcing today will take effect later this summer. And besides, just like protecting dreamers, the action taken today is overwhelmingly supported by the American people. No matter what the other team says, polls actually show that more than 70 percent of Americans support this effort to keep their families. importantly, the reason is simple. This adheres to the American principle that we must keep families together.

The Biden administration emphasizes that noncitizens who pose a threat to national security or public safety Won’t do be eligible for this process.

Senator John Cornyn (Republican of Texas) criticized the president’s action.

“Well, the problem is that President Biden is trying to please everyone and the process is pleasing no one. After 2 1/2 years and 94 executive orders, he finally said, well, I’m going to get really cracked down at the border and then turn around and basically propose what is a huge incentive or magnet for more illegal immigration .

As Senator Cornyn points out, the President’s action comes two weeks after signing a separate executive order that would allow to forbid migrants who cross the southern border illegally to seek asylum. The move angered some Latino voters — who make up a key voting bloc in the November election, which is about five months away. The order will likely be challenged in federal court.
