After an injury-riddled season in 2023, cornerback Tyson Campbell looks set to return to form for the Jacksonville Jaguars this year.

Campbell missed six games last year with a hamstring injury and appeared to play poorly in the games he did play as he battled a delicate soft tissue illness throughout the season. year.

As a result, Campbell had the worst statistical season of his career. The three-year veteran recorded just one interception and recorded five pass breakups, a steep decline from his sophomore campaign where he snagged three interceptions and 15 pass deflections.

Campbell has been one of the most impressive players during Jacksonville’s Phase 3 offseason workout. He seemed completely healed and ready to take the next step in his progression as a leader.

“We are very pleased with his continued growth and development,” assistant defensive back coach Corey Robinson said of Campbell. “The way he attacks every day. I mean, he’s a pro, right? He’s a guy who has a serious mentality going into the game.

Robinson said Campbell has rehabilitated well and hasn’t seen any physical limitations in him this offseason. This will be Robinson’s first season with Campbell, but even in his short time, he has been impressed with his maturity.

“He knows the expectations are high,” Robinson continued. “I think he’s a guy who wants to meet and exceed the expectations that we have, and even the expectations that he asks himself. He is very aware.

Those expectations have increased this offseason. The Jaguars released cornerback Darious Williams and safety Rayshawn Jenkins earlier this year. That meant the onus would be on Campbell to become even more of a leader.

The team also drafted Jarrian Jones and Deantre Prince this offseason. Both rookies could see significant playing time early in their careers as the team attempts to define its secondary of the future.

“As coaches, the best rooms are the player-led ones,” Robinson said. He added that it starts with the coaches, especially defensive backs coach Kris Richard for their room, but the ability to find and develop leaders plays a big role in the success of the position group.

“Tyson is the guy who has (leadership) naturally,” he continued. “I think the more comfortable he feels in our defense and the plan and what we’re asking him to do and then going out there and being successful, that’s only going to encourage him and push him to s express more.

“Which I think is really good for us and our young group.”
