Alan Shearer has hit out at Erik ten Hag after he appeared as a Dutch TV pundit for Euro 2024.

The Man United boss was on duty with TV channel NOS for England’s 1-0 victory over Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener on Sunday and spoke candidly about his views.

During his appearance, Ten Hag opened up on the last month where his future at Old Trafford has been extremely uncertain, while also being damning in his assessment of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

This came after the Dutchman was outspoken about pundits’ criticism of him during the season, while he also clashed with Shearer and Gary Lineker after the FA Cup final when he claimed that the media treatment of himself and his team had been “unfair”.

And Shearer found it ironic that Ten Hag appeared on TV after his comments last month, when he has also opened up about the wider speculation surrounding his future in recent weeks.

The Man United boss was extremely critical of England boss Gareth Southgate on Sunday evening.

“Apart from the Euros, it has been confirmed that Erik Ten Hag will remain in charge of Manchester United,” he told Betfair.

“Considering he took a bit of pity towards the pundits after the FA Cup final, it was really interesting to see him become a pundit himself on TV recently. But what a waste it was.

“How kind of Man United to go to Ibiza and inform him that he is still wanted as manager, then tell him that they have even spoken to other candidates.

“It’s just a bizarre situation, it’s not the way things should be done in football. If you have to talk to other managers, talk to them, but keep it internal, you can’t let the public know.

Speaking after England’s match against NOS, Ten Hag said: “England were playing very passively. In fact, I saw them retreat, they pushed Serbia to come towards them.

“That’s the manager’s (Southgate) vision. England will take a 1-0 lead, then he decides to start betting by making his team compact and counting on moments for the remaining minutes of the match.

Shearer also commented on the widespread speculation about Ten Hag’s role over the past month.

More broadly, Shearer also felt that Ten Hag’s position had been seriously weakened over the past month, despite him still being in the job and in discussions over a new deal.

He added: “To be undermined the way he has done, I know they are now saying he has their support and they want him to continue, but from a personal and human point of view, this is not the right way to treat someone.”

“It takes away a lot of his power, will the players look at him and think he’s a really strong manager and he’s in a strong position?

“Probably not because of the way they treated him. It was supposed to be all new at Old Trafford with the best coming in, I don’t think they got off to a good start.
