5 killed when jet hits vehicle after taking off from Arizona airport

Five people have been killed after a plane crashed into a vehicle during takeoff at an airport in Mesa, Arizona.

On Tuesday, November 5, around 4:40 PM local time, a Honda HA-420 jet crashed at Falcon Field Airport, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed to PEOPLE.

“The aircraft struck a vehicle outside the airport grounds,” the statement read.

“Our community has suffered a tragic loss…a plane crashed into a single vehicle on Greenfield Rd upon takeoff from Falcon Field in Mesa,” Mesa police added in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Police identified four of the five victims on Wednesday, November 6, as Spencer Lindahl, 43; Rustin Randall, 48; Drew Kimball, 44; and Graham Kimball, 12, according to a news release obtained by PEOPLE. Police confirmed that five local Arizonans were on board the plane; the pilot, co-pilot and three passengers.

“One person on the plane survived and is currently in hospital with burns,” the statement said.

“The driver of a vehicle involved in the accident also died. We are not releasing the name pending official confirmation of the identity,” it added.

A preliminary accident incident report released by the FAA stated that a flight crew member was in serious condition. According to the report, a description claimed that the “plane crashed during takeoff under unknown circumstances” and that there was a “post-crash fire.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) added in a statement obtained by PEOPLE: “Preliminary information indicates the aircraft struck airport perimeter fencing and a passenger vehicle during an aborted takeoff at Falcon Field Airport.”

On Tuesday, Mesa police confirmed they were “working on a plane crash at Greenfield and McKellips Road,” urging people to take alternate routes because roads were closed in a post shared on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Update on traffic following last night’s plane crash. Greenfield remains closed in both directions from McKellips to McDowell. All other traffic is open. If you are working in the closed area, officers are allowing people to enter their work area,” police said . then posted on X on Wednesday.

The NTSB told PEOPLE that an investigation was underway.

“While investigators are on scene, they will begin documenting the scene and examining the aircraft. The aircraft will then be recovered in a secure facility for further evaluation,” the NTSB said in a statement.
