Noam Chomsky’s wife and Brazilian hospital break silence following reports of his death

Noam Chomsky’s wife has broken her silence over rumors that the famous linguist and activist breathed his last on Tuesday at the age of 95. “It’s a lie, he is fine,” Valeria Wasserman Chomsky told AFP, rejecting reports of his death.

American Jewish academic Noam Chomsky, 95, was admitted to a Brazilian hospital while recovering from a stroke he suffered a year ago. He developed right-sided weakness (hemiplegia) following this event. Earlier, Valeria confirmed to NBC News that her husband had difficulty speaking and the right side of his body was severely affected.

Meanwhile, the Beneficencia Portuguesa Hospital in São Paulo released a statement confirming that Chomsky has been released and that his treatment will continue at home. “Patient Avram Noam Chomsky has been discharged and will continue his treatment at home.” No further details about his health were provided.

Chomsky was trending on X earlier Tuesday as rumors of his death spread like fire on social media. Jacobin and The New Statesman both published obituaries for Chomsky. However, the former changed its title to “Celebrating Noam Chomsky” instead of “We Remember Noam Chomsky”.

The New Statesman has completely removed an article written by Yanis Varoufakis, the former Greek finance minister. Diario do Centro do Mundo, a Brazilian media outlet, also deleted and corrected the article announcing Chomsky’s disappearance.
