Letitia James then promises to fight Trump’s ‘retaliation’

Attorney General of New York Letitia James told reporters Wednesday that she would run against the former president Donald Trump if he used the presidency to seek “retaliation” against her after his election victory on Tuesday.

Jameswhose office went next Trump in a civil lawsuit that banned him from doing business in New York for three years, also indicated that she would cooperate with him if necessary.

Because Trump’s legal troubles are expected to largely disappear after his historic vice presidential defeat Kamla HarrisJames addressed the media on Wednesday afternoon. James said:

We worked together both in my office and with other Democratic AGs across the country to ensure that we would be ready to respond to any attempt to roll back our rights. So here we are. We studied their platforms. We have identified certain possibilities, fact patterns. We have made contingency plans. So no matter what the next government has to offer us. We are ready. We are ready to respond to their attacks. We are ready to respond to any attempt to cut or defund the great state of New York, as the Governor has outlined.

So despite what has happened on the national stage, we will remain steadfast in the face of injustice, revenge or retaliation. We will continue to protect our most vulnerable and marginalized among us. Because it is my sworn duty and responsibility to lead that fight. Working with the Governor of this great state, Kathy Hochul. This is not the time to be afraid, New York. But faithful and steadfast. Knowing that I, as Attorney General, together with my entire team, are the keepers of the law. And we are ready, my friends, to fight back. Thank you.

James also congratulated Trump on his election victory.

Her office filed a civil case against Trump, accusing his company of fraudulent business practices in which the Trump Organization inflated the value of its assets to secure favorable loan terms from banks.

Judge of the New York Supreme Court Arthur Engoron banned the president-elect from running a New York-based company for three years and ordered him and his company to pay a $354 million fine.

Trump, who has categorized the case as a political witch hunt, is awaiting sentencing after a criminal jury in Manhattan found him guilty of 34 charges of falsifying company records.

The nation’s 45th and soon-to-be 47th president also has unresolved legal issues in Georgia and two federal cases against him — one for alleged misuse of classified documents and another for election interference.

As Politics notedTrump’s criminal cases are expected to essentially disappear with his election victory:

Trump’s impending return to the White House overturns special counsel Jack Smith’s years-long work to convict Trump for his attempt to undermine the 2020 election and for the cache of classified documents he kept at his Florida estate.

It also ends the persecution he faces in Georgia over his 2020 election plan.

It almost certainly allows Trump to defer a sentence on his conviction in New York for covering up a 2016 hush-money scheme.
