Dystopica, a five-piece metal band led by vocalist Becky Brideau, recently released their first full-length album, courtesy of Pavement Entertainment. The recording is called Infinite reflection and features songs such as “Images Reflecting Within,” “Revenge,” “Awaken” and album closer, “Blackout.”

There are many words to describe Dystopica’s unique sound. They fit well under the metal umbrella, but a press release also steers listeners toward thrash metal and progressive metal. They’re heavy and aggressive, and both of those adjectives are on full display in the music videos for “The Dent In My Life,” “Blackout,” and “Far From Perfect.”

Brideau recently exchanged emails with Hollywood soap box to present the group and its new album. Joining her in the group are Rob Muller on guitar and Erich Bender on drums. Lucas Dellaporta (bass) and Connor Sperry (guitar) also tour with Dystopica. The questions and answers have been lightly edited for style.

What can music fans expect from your first full-length album, Infinite reflection?

Music fans can expect a heavy, melodic and progressive album with harmonized guitar riffs, guitar solos, female vocals and a diverse tracklist. Infinite reflection it is about reflecting on the past, seizing the present and redefining the future. Each song on the album is very distinct from one another, but together they tell a story of evolution through time. The album combines various subgenres of metal such as classic heavy metal, thrash metal, progressive metal and even neoclassical, symphonic metal and death metal.

Some have called you metal. Others say thrash, and others say progressive. How do you define your sound?

If I had to choose a genre to label our sound I would just say metal because our sound is a mix of different metal subgenres. I describe our sound as a mix of heavy metal, hard rock, thrash metal and progressive metal. We are heavily inspired by classic heavy metal and bring back the qualities of classic heavy metal and thrash metal, including dual guitar riffs and guitar solos in every song. Our music is also progressive and also incorporates modern metal elements.

What was the band’s first day of 2019 like?

On the first day of Dystopica, I was determined to form a metal band and write music for the first song we ever recorded, “Broken.”

What do you hope for from the new album? Gather more fans in the United States and beyond?

We hope this album introduces our music to more people in the United States and around the world. Through social media we can reach people all over the world and have built a wonderful fan base. We’re looking forward to playing more shows to support the album and hope to travel more, playing places we’ve never played before.

What inspired the song “The Dent in My Life”?

“The Dent In My Life” represents a time when I wasn’t living my life the way I wanted to. Since the album as a whole is about time and evolution, I think this track fits in well. It’s the only song I’ve written so far that I didn’t originally intend to write. When I first thought of this song in my head, I thought it didn’t fit the band’s sound and I didn’t want to write it. After being stuck in my head for years, I decided to write it, and I’m glad I did because I like the way it came out.

What’s it like working with Pavement Entertainment?

It’s been great working with Pavement Entertainment. The whole team is very supportive, responsive and wants what is best for the group. They provide services and support to help upcoming bands/musicians be heard.
