Scorching temperatures won’t stop New Jersey residents from having fun outside

New Jersey’s lingering heat wave isn’t impacting people’s summer plans.

“You need to get out in the sun because it’s just good for you,” said Anthony, of Jersey City. “You have to be in good health. It’s good for your mental health, your physical health.

But there is a special time to enjoy the sun. Experts say the most dangerous time to go outside during a heatwave is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“We’re already seeing an increase in the number of heat-related illnesses presenting to emergency rooms,” said Dr. Erin Muckey of University Hospital. “Everything from the most benign things like a rash, to heat exhaustion, and then the serious medical emergency, which is heat stroke.”

Muckey also recommends hydrating regularly, not just when thirsty. The water may not even be enough; It is important to replenish electrolytes with a sports drink.

At Liberty State Park, thousands of people ran, biked, skated and sunbathed in the evenings when things cooled down a bit. Others came for the park’s annual Juneteenth celebration.

“I’m trying my best (to stay cool), but the music is starting to get me moving!” said Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman.

“When you have an event of this size, security is very important,” said Shannon Mitchell, co-founder of All About Us. “EMS is on site. We have cooling stations and free water.

From personal fans to ice cream cones, attendees had their own way of staying cool.

Doctors also emphasized the importance of applying and maintaining sunscreen during the period of sun exposure.
