A positive step in the field of quarrying

A positive step in the field of quarrying

I would like to thank the quarry owners for their October 8 letter offering the city two options regarding the expansion of Brickyard Quarry.

Gorham citizens have shared their health and safety concerns with city and state officials over the past year. People have documented dust, odors, property damage, excessive noise and concerns about explosions. On October 8, the quarry owners sent a letter to the city outlining two options for the city to consider: option 1 – an expansion of the quarry of 26 hectares, and option 2 – an expansion of the quarry of only 6, 33 hectares. The rest would be spent on about 200 manufactured homes, which would help with the state’s affordable housing crisis and protect other neighbors from the quarry’s impacts.

The Brickyard Quarry is remarkably close to downtown Gorham and affects hundreds of residents. Shaw Brothers’ willingness to listen and adjust plans based on neighbors’ health and safety concerns is a good start. The quarry will impact the town of Gorham for the rest of our lives and for all generations to come. Thinking about the future of the quarry should be something we all think about.

In light of safety and health concerns, we believe that Gorham and the state should review all quarry regulations before approving any quarry expansion. What is more important than the health and safety of our citizens?
