Students were injured when five school buses crashed on the highway on their way to a band competition

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPLC/Gray News) – Several high school students in Louisiana were injured Tuesday in a crash while on their way to a marching band competition.

The crash involved five school buses and a truck pulling a tire trailer from Chalmette High School on Interstate 10 in the afternoon, according to Lafayette police.

According to authorities, the accident happened when one of the buses collided with the bus in front of it, causing a chain reaction with the rest of the buses.

Lafayette Police Officer Robin Green said six students were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

According to Green, the buses were headed to the Louisiana Music Educators Association State Marching Championship at McNeese State University.

Police closed a portion of I-10 for nearly two hours while they investigated a crash at the scene.
