Former Northern Cass volleyball coach resigns after allegedly ‘physically restraining’ student-athlete – InForum

FARGO – The mid-season firing of former Northern Cass volleyball head coach Angie Johnson came after the school suspended her without pay pending an investigation that she was allegedly physically restrained, exchanged obscenities and stole a student’s tooth athlete had broken off.

These details were revealed in Johnson’s personnel file with the Northern Cass School District, which The Forum requested through an open records request.

Northern Cass Superintendent Cory Steiner informed Johnson of the charges and suspension in a letter dated Oct. 1.

The letter accused Johnson of “chipping off a student-athlete’s tooth, exchanging obscenities with a student-athlete, and physically restraining a student-athlete.” No other details were provided.

Johnson declined to comment on the allegations when contacted by The Forum on Friday, October 25. She formally resigned as coach on October 4.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have been given in this role,” Johnson wrote in her resignation letter. “I will hold all relationships and memories close to my heart.”

Northern Cass Activities Director Bryce Laxdal declined comment Friday.

Johnson began her sixth season as head coach of the Jaguars this fall. She led Northern Cass to back-to-back North Dakota Class B state volleyball championships in 2022 and 2023.

Beth Head and Jamie Haseleu were named co-head coaches of the Jaguars volleyball team after Johnson resigned.

The Jaguars are 22-9 overall this season and 7-2 in Region 1. Northern Cass will play Thompson on the road on Monday, October 28 at 7 p.m.

“It was difficult,” Johnson told The Forum via text message last week about her resignation, “but I had to make a decision that was best for myself, my family and the team.”
