Warriors offered 2-year contract ahead of NBA free agency

The Golden State Warriors have a two-year contract offer on the table for Klay Thompson ahead of his upcoming free agency, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

During an appearance Thursday on The Hoop Collective, MacMahon revealed that “we heard it was a two-year offer” (30:25). He added that the length of the deal could mean more to Thompson than the price, explaining that “in some of these cases it’s as much about years as it is dollars.”

NBC Sports’ Monte Poole previously reported Monday that the veteran was seeking a contract lasting “at least three years.”

Thompson is eligible to re-sign with the Warriors ahead of his unrestricted free agent status on June 30 due to a new league rule that allows teams to negotiate with their own free agents, although it appears that both sides still have some obstacles to overcome. negotiations.

On May 30, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported that there was “no notable movement” between Thompson and the Warriors regarding a potential new contract.

The 13-year veteran took a step back on both ends of the court during his 2023-24 campaign, as his scoring average of 17.9 points per game represented the lowest mark since his 2012-13 season. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, shooting 43.2 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from behind the arc.

Thompson also bounced between the starting lineup and the bench as the Warriors failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021 despite finishing the regular season with a 46-36 record.

While he could still return to the organization once he is allowed to negotiate with other teams in free agency, an opposing front office could offer him a three-year contract that he would seek. According to Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic, there is “mutual interest” between Thompson and the Orlando Magic.

If he can’t find common ground on the length of a potential contract with the Warriors, he could end up on another team at the start of the 2024-25 season.
