Marquette police offer to check vacant homes

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – If you’re going to be away from home for some time this winter, Marquette Police are here to check on your vacant home.

In addition to making sure you have good locks on doors and windows, Capt. James Finkbeiner of the Marquette Police Department says you can have an officer watch over the property.

He says they will set up a schedule of people and visit their homes several times a week. An officer ensures that the doors are locked and that nothing is broken or taken. They also contact homeowners if something is wrong.

“Well, there are some residents who leave for months, you know, most of the winter, but there are people who leave for a few weeks or something like that,” Finkbeiner said. “We are happy to visit you to inspect these homes.”

He says the service has been around for a long time and is offered year-round to Marquette residents. He says it’s meant to give people peace of mind.

Interested parties can complete one vacant home form on the city’s website or call the department at 906-228-0400 to request check-ins.
