My rating: Moderate
My score: Perfect

I’m feeling quite smug today, having solved what I consider to be one of the hardest purple connections in weeks. Again, the trick was to focus on the words that seemed to have very little connection to anything – not just the other words here, but literally everything. Here they were the words EGADS and MONTE, which are unusual in themselves and seemed well isolated among the other fourteen options. So I played around with the letters a bit and realized that EGADS was an anagram of DEGAS. That led to YOGA (GOYA), MONTE (MONET) and DIAL (DALI) and I had solved the most difficult group here.

I had already completed yellow before this – the very simple FOOD RELATED JUMBLES, with HASH, SALAD, SCRAMBLE and STEW – which meant I only needed one more group. That ended up being a PUBLIC STANDING (STAFF, IMAGE, NAME, REPUTATION), which means I solved today’s match without any errors – unusual.

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.

It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.
